Immigration New Zealand has announced two important changes to graduate work visa pathways, both taking effect from late 2026. A brand-new Short Term Graduate Work Visa will be introduced, and eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa will be extended to cover graduates of one-year Graduate Diplomas at NZQCF Level 7. These changes are designed to attract and retain skilled international graduates while supporting New Zealand's broader skills needs.
1. New: Short Term Graduate Work Visa
At a Glance
The Short Term Graduate Work Visa is a new visa category that provides a transitional window of open work rights for graduates of shorter New Zealand qualifications. It gives holders time to find suitable employment and, where appropriate, transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa โ the main skilled work visa pathway in New Zealand.
Eligibility Criteria
All of the following conditions must be met:
- Holds a qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7 that was studied full-time for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand โ and that does not make the applicant eligible for a Post Study Work Visa
- The qualification is not an English language, foundation, or bridging qualification
- Has at least NZD $5,000 available to support themselves financially
- Has not previously been granted a Short Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post Study Work Visa
- Application is submitted within three months of the New Zealand student visa expiring
- Meets medical and chest X-ray requirements, depending on intended length of stay
- If study was funded under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme, written approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Education New Zealand is required
Key Conditions and Restrictions
- Open work rights: Holders may work for any employer in any role, under a valid employment agreement or contract for services
- Business ownership is not permitted under this visa
- Cannot sponsor a partner for a work visa or dependent children for a Dependent Child Student Visa โ though a visitor visa may be available for family members, and partners may apply for a work visa on their own merits
- Valid for up to six months only โ no extensions, and a second Short Term Graduate Work Visa cannot be granted
- Any future study in New Zealand must be at bachelor's degree level or above, and must lead to Post Study Work Visa eligibility
2. Updated: Post Study Work Visa Eligibility Expanded
Key Change
New Eligibility Criteria
To qualify under the expanded rules, graduates must:
- Have completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 in New Zealand
- Have studied the Graduate Diploma full-time, for the full duration of the programme, in New Zealand
- Have been enrolled in the qualification from start to finish โ cross-crediting and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are not accepted
- Hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas (no time limit on when the degree was awarded)
Documents Required
- Graduate Diploma completion certificate
- Bachelor's degree certificate showing the qualification type and awarding institution
- Official academic transcript for the Graduate Diploma
An International Qualification Assessment is not required for overseas bachelor's degrees, though Immigration New Zealand may verify the authenticity of overseas qualifications for immigration purposes.
Visa Duration and Family Provisions
- Duration equals the time spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year
- Holders may support partners and dependent children for visitor, work, or student visas, subject to requirements
- Only one Post Study Work Visa is ever granted per person โ a second cannot be issued, even if a higher qualification is completed later

What This Means for Indian Students
These changes are particularly relevant for Indian students, many of whom already hold a bachelor's degree from India and are considering a one-year Graduate Diploma in New Zealand as a focused, career-oriented qualification.
Under the expanded rules, a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 โ combined with any bachelor's degree from India โ will qualify for the Post Study Work Visa. This is a meaningful shift from the previous position, where only those who completed a full bachelor's degree in New Zealand had a clear open-work-rights pathway after graduation.
For students in Level 5 or Level 6 programmes, the new Short Term Graduate Work Visa creates a defined post-study work window that previously did not exist. Six months of open work rights gives graduates a realistic opportunity to secure employment and potentially transition to the Accredited Employer Work Visa.
One important planning consideration: if you take the Short Term Graduate Work Visa after a shorter qualification, any future study in New Zealand must be at bachelor's degree level or above, and must lead to Post Study Work Visa eligibility. Students should factor this into their long-term educational pathway before making enrolment decisions.

Our Take
These are genuinely positive changes for students considering New Zealand as a study destination. By extending the Post Study Work Visa to Graduate Diploma graduates and creating a defined short-term work pathway for diploma-level qualifications, New Zealand is broadening its appeal to a wider range of students โ including the large cohort of Indian graduates who arrive with an existing bachelor's degree and want a shorter, career-focused programme rather than a second full degree.
At the same time, the rules carry important nuances: the RPL restriction, the one-visa-per-lifetime rule, and the future study limitations for Short Term Graduate Work Visa holders all require careful planning. These are not decisions to make at the last minute.
If you are currently assessing New Zealand as a study option, or if you are already enrolled and approaching graduation, now is the right time to get a clear picture of which pathway applies to your specific situation.
