Genuine Student (GS) Requirement

The old 300-word Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement has been replaced with targeted questions. This is one of the most critical parts of your Australian student visa application — a weak response is a leading cause of refusals.

GS Assessment Covers:

Your reasons for choosing Australia for study
Why you chose this specific course and institution
How this course aligns with your career goals
Your ties to India (family, property, employment prospects)
Your immigration history and any previous visa refusals
Your financial capacity to fund your studies and living
Your plans after completing your studies

Key improvement over GTE: Unlike the old GTE, you can now express a future desire to migrate to Australia. Your primary intent right now must be to study genuinely — future migration aspirations are acceptable.

Old GTE vs New GS — What Changed?

GS answers are critically evaluated

A weak or generic GS response remains one of the top reasons for student visa refusal. Our counsellors have prepared 8,000+ successful applications and know exactly what answers work.

English Language Requirements

Traffic-Light Visa Processing Model

Australia's Department of Home Affairs now categorises universities into Green, Amber, and Red processing zones based on how much of their international student enrolment cap they've used. Choosing a Green Zone university significantly speeds up your visa.

Green Zone
4–6 weeks

Below 80% enrolment cap usage

Amber Zone
6–8 weeks

80–115% enrolment cap usage

Red Zone
8–12+ weeks

Above 115% enrolment cap usage

Our advice: We match you to Green Zone universities wherever possible to ensure the fastest visa processing time. Zone classifications are updated regularly — our counsellors have the latest information.

Document Checklist

As an Indian applicant at Evidence Level 3, thorough documentation is essential. Here's the standard checklist:

1
Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond intended stay)
2
Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your institution
3
Genuine Student (GS) answers — targeted questions
4
IELTS / PTE / TOEFL or other accepted English test results
5
Academic transcripts, mark sheets and degree certificates
6
Financial evidence — minimum AUD 29,710/year + tuition + airfare
7
Bank statements showing a 3-month funds history
8
OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) policy document
9
Health examination results from DHA-approved panel physician
10
Police clearance certificate (if living in India 12+ months)
11
Additional proof for family: AUD 10,394 (spouse) + AUD 4,449/child
12

Use the official DHA tool: Your exact evidence requirements depend on both your nationality AND your chosen institution. Always check the DHA Document Checklist Tool at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/web-evidentiary-tool for your specific requirements.

All Important 2026 Rule Changes

Australia has made significant changes to student visa rules recently. Every Indian applicant must know these before applying.

01

Onshore Visa Restriction

You can NO LONGER switch from a visitor visa or Temporary Graduate Visa (485) to a student visa while inside Australia. All student visa applications must now be lodged from offshore (outside Australia).

02

India Reclassified to Evidence Level 3

From January 8, 2026, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan were reclassified to Evidence Level 3 — the highest documentation requirement level. Comprehensive financial and academic documentation is mandatory. Check the DHA Document Checklist Tool for exact requirements.

03

Genuine Student (GS) Replaces GTE

From March 23, 2024, the old 300-word Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement was replaced with targeted questions about your study intent, course choice, career goals, and ties to India. You can now express future migration interest — unlike the old GTE requirement.

04

Traffic-Light Processing Model

From November 14, 2025, universities are categorised as Green/Amber/Red zones based on their enrolment cap usage. Choosing a Green Zone university means significantly faster visa processing (4–6 weeks vs 8–12+ weeks for Red Zone).

05

National Student Cap: 295,000

Australia has introduced a 295,000 commencements cap for international students annually to manage overall migration levels. Early applications and careful institution selection are now more important than ever.

06

Eight English Test Providers Now Accepted

From August 7, 2025, nine tests from eight providers are accepted: IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, OET, MET, CELPIP General, and LANGUAGECERT Academic.
